Viking Jewelry

It is well known that Vikings cherished their jewels. Pendants, bracelets, rings, and other items are among the Viking artifacts. According to Viking grave sites, both men and women would wear a variety of jewelry, including pieces with animal themes, knotwork patterns, and, of course, the Mjölnir (Thor's hammer). Both bulky (designed to resist the rigors of battle) and occasionally incredibly detailed jewelry was used by the Vikings (to proclaim their wealth). Similar to how it is in many modern societies, jewelry was a means of both affiliation and self-expression for the Vikings. By way of example, a pendant of Thor's hammer that symbolized both protection and the strength of thunder and lightning served to convey the wearer's strength. Their skill demonstrated their fidelity to their gods, their beliefs, and their ancestry. These different Viking insignia were carved onto stones, their ships, their weapons, and other items in addition to jewelry.
