In the early centuries of Christianity, Duleek was a significant ecclesiastical town. Its Cross is unusual and quite fascinating. St. Ciaran (also known as Kennean), who was baptized by St. Patrick in 472 AD, created it. He constructed Ireland’s first church made of stone here. The town’s name, Daimh Liag, is an Irish phrase meaning “house of stones.” Aerial photos of the town demonstrate how the religious boundaries still impose themselves on the city pattern today. The center thrived and flourished for more than 700 years.
Duleek, which featured hospitals, palm houses, and sanctuaries, rose to prominence on par with Armagh, Clonard, or Clonmacnoise. After the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, the bodies of Brian Boru and his son-in-law were laid to rest there while being transported to Armagh for burial. The O’Kelly family eventually established an Augustinian priory there. Hugh de Lacy, a Norman who later constructed a castle nearby, gave the Gloucestershire Augustinians ownership of the Church of St. Ciaran in 1180. A few years previously, the Priory had been pillaged by the Normans themselves.
One peculiar aspect of the High Cross is that its East face is entirely covered in geometric and curvilinear Celtic patterns. A scene with three persons may be seen at the bottom of the West face. It might be the holy family or the presentation of our Lord in the Temple. A Crucifixion scene is in the center, and at the top of the cross is a scene from the monastery’s history. Above are two panels, each with two individuals facing and one with hands clasped and the other with hands raised. It appears that St. Adamnon went to the tomb of St. Ciaran, where his uncorrupted body was lying. He touched the corpse in violation of the law, and as a result, his eye was injured.

The restoration is seen in the top panel. While the center displays a pattern with seven bosses, the East face appears to have a symbolic vine. Researchers now understand that early Irish painters created everything with precision and meaning, regardless of the media they used (Hilary Richardson, 1984). It appears that they adopted the Celts’ designs and created a new symbolic language utilizing design and the numerology to communicate the Christian message.
